Spoiler

15 august 2019

She was watching a tv series, and after the first thirty minutes she figured out what was going to happen. ‘It is too predictable, and I’m not talking about what is going to happen in the next episode. Actually, I don’t know what is going to happen in the next episode. I am talking about I know what important plot twist is going to take place this or the next season or the next, I don’t know when. So I won’t watch the series anymore’ said Angela to her friend Anna.

Two months before she had split with her husband. Now her ex-husband. Three months ago she had said to Anna ``I can’t imagine with him in two or five or 20 years’. ‘I don’t want to have children with him, I would feel tied forever to him’. “Then, why you married him?; asked Anna. ‘ I loved him of course, and I have been patient but this is not working, and it seems that neither we are trying to make it work anymore”.

Before she told her husband that she would leave their common house in two days, she was in her office staring at the screen of her computer, while outside was hot and sunny. ‘I know what is going to happen, I will leave him or he will leave me in one, or two, or twenty years. I don’t know when is happening. I know it is not going to happen tomorrow but I can assure this is going to happen’.

Two years later a friend told her that her prediction about what was going to happen in the tv series actually just happened. He told her that no matter he also suspected that, he enjoyed the series. “Maybe the surprises were not so good, but at least there were surprises in every episode. It's pretty exciting” ‘I understand’ said Angela, ‘but I just could not stand knowing what was going to happen.’ “Oh, I got it - said his friend - I split with my ex-wife because of that. After two years of marriage, I knew exactly what was going to happen every day. There was not any surprise.’
“But were you happy? Did you get along with your wife?” Asked Angela surprised. ‘Yes, we got along,  I was happy enough, but life was boring, really boring.” he said.
“What did you imagine for the future for you both when you were still married? Did you have an idea of what was going to happen?” Asked Angela. ‘Yes,  indeed. I knew exactly what was going to happen. It was the very same day every day, like groundhog day.’
“It’s funny” -said Angela. “If I had had what you had, I would still be married.”

At that moment they looked at each other for just three seconds. In that time she realised that although he was handsome and nice, he was too difficult to please and a bit immature. They could go out a couple of times, have some sex and some fun, but afterward, she would get bored with his childish comments and his lack of profundity. On his part, he saw her in her tight dress and stared at her waist for one second, imagined themselves kissing for another one, and realised in the third second that after two months he should be sick of her bossy attitude. Then, they smiled at each other, both sure they had had similar thoughts. They wished a good evening to each other and went back to work.
